Velma: Fashion Plait?

Velma was suppose to be the uncool member of the Scooby Doo mystery solving team. However I am starting to believe she was just ahead of her time. I mean look at her, she seems to be what every hipster aspires to these days, unnecessarily large glasses, unflattering hair and grandma clothes. Perfect! Maybe a few of the designers at fashion week got their inspiration from this fine mismatched young lady.

Outfit of the day 2/17/10

I am really starting to hate winter, so today I figured I'd wear an outfit that is wintery without being all dreary. Today I am wearing a band style jacket from the Rampage. I just felt like channeling Michael Jackson a little. I am also wearing a Forever 21 dress. It always make me think of christmas. Although you can't see it here the skirt is pinned up slightly in the back so some of the black tool shows. I love this dress, you just look put together effortlessly. Although I really loved this outfit I am quite ready for winter to be over and to wear flouncy short dresses without jackets and tights.

Halston Fall/Winter 2010

Finally after a bunch of lack-luster shows the ever gorgeous Halston finally offers something new and interesting. Fur has been huuuuuge these last couple of seasons but i keep seeming the same take on it over and over. However Halston added fur accents onto unexpected geometric detailed dresses. This really spiced up a few of their looks and took them to the next level. Of course there were also the usual gorgeous Halston flowy grecian dresses that every fashionista desires, but their classic look met the contemporary in a very chic way.

NYC Fashion Week!

I cannot believe the stuff that has come out of the fall/winter 2010 fashion week, crazy grandma layers and sweaters seemed to be the hot ticket along with the resurgence of camouflage at certain shows such as Balmain. I have to say I have been a little disappointed thus far because I have not seen much that has been new, sure feathers and sequins are fun but I am tired of seeing them on everything. Alice & Olivia (seen left) was slightly disappointing to me because you could find half of the stuff at Urban Outfitters.
Even Boy by Band of Outsiders (seen very top) proved to fall into this granny chic trend that I am oh so tired of seeing. I feel like it is now a crime to show off your body and dress your age.
One of the few show I have not been disappointed with was Charlotte Ronson (seen 2nd top), instead of using the usual dreary and muted colors of winter she experimented with bright magentas and orange and voluminous pants. So lets hope the shows following pull out a little more excitement.

Outfit of the Day 2/12/10

I really need a camera because these photobooth pictures are just not cutting it because I can't get full shots of my outfit. Today I am wearing my new favorite dress, a floral frock from BCBGeneration. It has flouncy full sleeves which I love. I could not wait until spring to wear it so I paired it with black tights and my mom's black pointed ankle boots. It is my own way of wishing for spring.

R.I.P to a Great

Alexander McQueen, one of the most innovative and creative designer of our time was found dead today in his london home. News reporters say the investigation is pointing towards suicide. It sis so sad to see such a young artist of such talent come to this. His extremely decadent and beautiful creations have influenced designers worldwide. This is a devastating loss, his imprint on the world of fashion will live on forever. R.I.P. You will be forever missed.

NEWS BREAK: helping out is super stylish

As a super broke college student it is hard to contribute to many needy foundations however there is now a great way to help Haiti. So a cheap and chic way to help out has been introduced to us by a few membesr of the CFDA such as Diane Von Furstenburg and Ralph Lauren. Starting February 16th these $25 help Haiti t-shirts will be made available to the public. Now even I can afford to help out. Oh and Ms. Beyonce has lent her gorgeous face to the campaign.

I wish Alexander McQueen would be my valentine.

I LOVE Alexander McQueen, so in honor of him and this upcoming sappy holiday I am showcasing this great pair of neon pink pumps. The heart detail keeps them sweet instead of slutty. They look almost as delectable as those little sugar hearts. Although these are now on sale at Footcandy they still have a $370 price tag. Luckily the lovely ladies at The Lipstick Diaries have found an almost identical pair from Frederick's of Hollywood for $39. So whatever your price range these are a great valentines day gift for yourself or the lovely lady in your life.

Outfit of the Day 2/10/10: Hello NYC Snow Day

While it is tempting on a blizzardy day such as this to remain in my PJs I have opted to do the next best thing, an oversized sweater and leggings. As a college student I understand the temptation to wear sweats to class however I have not been guilty of this since sophomore year of high school. So although I do not even have class today (thank you weather gods!) I refuse to fall into that slump again.
The sweater I am wearing is Victoria's Secret one of the best christmas presents I have ever received. My leggings are Miley Cyrus and Max Azria for Walmart they have silver pyramid studs down the side. Now I know some stuck up upper east siders would not deign to wear Walmart clothing but they actually offer some great basics and fun dresses and tees. I personally cleaned out the entire Miley Cyrus selection. These two essentials paired with high chunky socks complete my outfit. So not only do I manage to not look like a slob but I am comfy and cozy. Now all i need is a cup of warm cocoa mmmm.
Enjoy the snow and stay warm!

Anne Hathaway: Pretty Bird

As far as I am concerned Ms. Hathaway is one of those celebrities that can do no wrong. I have seen a lot of this feather trend and most of the people who end up wearing it look more like road kill rather than chic fashonistas. The actress was seen wearing this royal Marchesa ensemble at the Valentines Day premiere. The color compliments her beautiful milky coloring but also keeps the dress appropriate for a premiere. The use of the metallic fabric turns down the look of this dress keeping it from looking like an art project gone awry. I give Anne an A.

One of my greatest fashion dreams is to wear a Marchesa wedding dress, because they are fun but maintain their femininity. Ahhh wish me luck with that.

and a Lucky Brand necklace.

Victoria's Secret: Not Just For Sexy Times.

So as many of you know Victoria's Secret is a great source for fun panties and overtly sexy lingerie, what many forget however is that it is a great place for clothing especially if you are not willing to spend too much. They're one of my go to places for bathing suits in the summer but also have a great selection of dresses in shorts. The only thing you have to keep in mind is that Victoria's Secret does not necessarily provide modest lengths for those who are bit shy, but hey flaunt it. Victoria's Secret is now also helping to fuel my new romper fetish with great choices such as these seen below. Now I am not a girl with a bodacious bod, but all the sizes run pretty true to size and I have been impressed with the fit and quality of the clothing. Even my mom is able to wear some of this clothing without much embarrassment for me.

So shop away!!!!

Here's to a Hopeful Beginning

To start, I'm Irene I'm 18 years old and a student living in New York City. If you are wondering about the name of my blog it's in honor of my Yiayia (grandma in Greek) who initially sparked my interest in all things decadent and fashionable. In my eyes she was the most stylish and beautiful person my young eyes had ever laid eyes on. She has passed away now, but her lessons and criticism have not.
So, for a while I have wanted to start a fashion blog that is more approachable to the masses, because to be honest with you I'm a true rookie. Although I love fashion, I am not attending school for it basically because I wanted a little taste of everything at school. So to be clear, i unfortunately have no connections, no job, but hope I will reach people like me who want to get into fashion but are not in the best situation.

Disclaimer
A little warning is needed to start out this blogging relationship, I am but an average college student so I do not have much money to dress in the likes of Marc Jacobs or Miu Miu. If you paid for clothes based on the love people had of them then perhaps I would be better dressed than most of the likes of hollywood, but alas fashion does not work that way. So while I won't be able to grace this blog with my new Balmain dress, I will provide anyone who is willing to read this information and opinions (sarcasm may apply) on trends, fashions, and street-wear. Like a true narcissist I will also talk about my fashion finds and failures.

Keep Checking back for updates!
Love
Irene
